How Can
the Saints Hear the Prayers of Millions of People at the Same Time?
This is a very interesting theological question:
How can the Saints hear the prayers of millions of people simultaneously, since omnipresence and omniscience are attributes belonging exclusively to God?
Let us examine this carefully, because theological accuracy is important here.
1. The Saints Are Not Omnipresent
Orthodoxy teaches that only God is omnipresent.
Angels and Saints are created beings. By their own nature, they do not possess:
- Omniscience.
- Omnipresence.
- Unlimited power.
- Divine omnipotence.
Therefore, we cannot claim that a Saint has, independently of God, the ability to hear all the prayers of the world simultaneously.
2. How, Then, Can They Hear Our Prayers?
The Orthodox theological explanation is that God can make known to the Saints the prayers addressed to them.
In other words, this is not an independent supernatural ability belonging to the Saint, but rather an action and gift of God.
The Saint does not become God. The Saint remains a created being, even in the glory of God.
3. What Does This Mean for the Veneration of Saints?
Here we find a fundamental distinction in Orthodox Christianity:
- Worship (Latria): Offered exclusively to the Triune God.
- Veneration: Offered to the Saints as God’s holy servants.
- Intercession: We ask the Saints to pray to God on our behalf.
4. An Important Question
If God already knows all our needs and can help us directly, why do we ask for the intercession of the Saints?
The answer lies in the communion of love and the unity of the Body of Christ.
Just as we ask a living brother or sister to pray for us, we also ask for the intercession of the Saints.
The Essential Point
Orthodoxy does not teach that the Saints possess an independent divine authority. Every gift they have comes from God.
This is the key to understanding the relationship between God, the Angels, and the Saints.
